HCOE Announces Redwood EdVentures Bike Quests

The Humboldt County Office of Education’s Redwood EdVentures program is excited to announce the launch of a new genre of Quests – Redwood EdVentures Bike Quests!

Created in partnership with the Redwood Community Action Agency, three new Quests along trails in Humboldt County have been added to the over two dozen Quests already available up and down the North Coast.

The three new Quests, one along the Eureka Waterfront Trail and two along the Hammond Trail, work just like the rest, but they are designed to be done while riding a bike as they cover more distance.

Redwood EdVentures Quests are fun, educational “treasure hunts” through various North Coast parks. Each Quest has a series of rhyming clues, guiding “EdVenturers” along a short trail to a final clue: the Quest Clue. This clue is the “key” that earns a prize for completing the Quest: A unique Redwood EdVentures Quest Patch.

Along the way, kids (and their parents) can learn about the myriad types of plants and animals that exist in Humboldt County’s uniquely beautiful and varying habitats, as well as the cultural history of the areas they are exploring. For example, the new Eureka Waterfront Trail Bike Quest educates participants on the history of the Eureka Slough railroad bridge, shorebirds and diving birds of the bay, and salt marsh habitat.

The three new bike quests also have a new feature: the ability to follow the directions and record your clues right on a smartphone.

Traditionally Quests have been followed using a brochure that contains the stops and movement clues, but the web-based directions provide a clean and simple interface that should be more convenient for Questing on a bike, and they also allow EdVenturers to record the clues as they go along – unlike most Quests, the Bike Quests have several clues to record along the route.

In conjunction with the launch of the three new Quests, Redwood EdVentures today debuts a new, mobile-friendly version of its website, where you can find information, directions, and downloadable brochures for all 28 active Quests. Quests are available all throughout the North Coast, from Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park near Crescent City all the way down to Richardson Grove and the Shelter Cove area.
