The City of Eureka has officially launched its new Youth Council program and selected four out of fourteen applicants for the Spring term of 2020. Applicants were between the ages of 14-17 of which all were outstanding, exemplary, and civic minded.
(From left to right in the above attached photo) Tristan Greene from Eureka High has a profound interest in history and politics, and currently volunteers at the Democratic Central Committee Office in Eureka. Stella Saba from Eureka High is interested in human rights, protecting the environment, a Teen Court leader, and wants to study law in the future. Christina Smith, also from Eureka High is a cross country runner that loves exploring Eureka’s outdoors and is involved in several clubs at school. Gwendalyn Parsons is an avid reader from Academy of the Redwoods, who wants to beautify Eureka and increase street safety.
Over the next four months, the Youth Council will learn about Eureka government, how City Council agendas are developed, how Council meetings are conducted, engage in thought provoking dialogue, research pre-selected agenda items and determine the potential impacts on local youth. Once a month during a Eureka City Council meeting, the Youth Council will either present their findings and recommendations on the pre-selected agenda item, or present a current issue Eureka youth are facing with a recommendation.
Youth Council will also participate in leadership activities that address soft skills just as verbal and non-verbal communication skills, public speaking skills and more.
Sierra Jenkins, Youth Council Coordinator says “The City hasn’t had this program in more than two decades, so the Community Services team is very excited to bring it back and be able to provide this invaluable opportunity to our local youth. They are an outstanding group that truly cares about the future of this community.”
Robin Praszker, Youth Council Supervisor says “Local teens are hardworking and care about our community. Providing a platform to utilize their skills and viewpoint is an invaluable resource for the City.”
