Join The City of Eureka’s Youth Council Internship Program
Represent Your Peers
The ultimate goal of this internship program is for the youth council to collectively assess the biggest city issue impacting Eureka’s youth population and diplomatically make a collective decision to advise the Eureka City Council on a solution. The youth council will hold an official public youth council meeting in the Eureka City Council Chambers each Friday. At this meetings youth council will give reports about their experience that week, as well as present their assessed challenge and solution. Only one of the five proposals will carry on to a final vote at the end of internship, and it will be up to youth council to collectively assess, debate and decide which one of the five challenges and solution are most important to the youth population in Eureka. Once a final vote is made, youth council will work with supervising staff to prepare an official recommendation to the Eureka City Council.
What is the Youth Council?
The City of Eureka Youth Council Internship Program is an exciting opportunity for youth ages 14-17 to learn about their local government while representing Eureka’s youth population, and making decisions for positive change for youth in Eureka. Eureka will choose five youth to serve on the youth council for each 8 week program period. This internship program will put youth right in the middle of city operations, while also giving them a platform to advise the Eureka City Council on important issues impacting Eureka’s youth. Youth will learn the inner workings of city operations, as well as get the opportunity to make decisions on behalf of the youth population, utilizing the same process the Eureka City Council makes decisions on city policy.
Over the course of 7 weeks, each member of the youth council will rotate interning for one week in 7 of the city departments offering critical city services: Police, Community Services, Finance, Public Works, Information Technologies (IT), Personnel, and Development Services. Interns will gain valuable experience, insight and knowledge of each of these departments by sitting in on meetings, helping on projects, shadowing a variety of positions and conducting a one-on-on interview with the Department Head. As youth gain valuable insight to the operation of each department, they will individually find out about both positive and negative issues the department faces. Interns will then meet with the youth council supervising staff and discuss how these issues are impacting Eureka’s youth population.
During the course of each session, interns will work with the following city departments to learn the ins and out of city operations:
- Community Service
- Public Works
